The making of flowers and designs from sea shells is an old art form that was brought back from journeys by the sailors in the 17th and 18th Centuries. Their ventures took them to Barbados where the Indians sold and taught the art of making sea shell designs in Octagon shaped boxes. During their long voyages at sea, these sailors longed for their wives and sweethearts. Since they did not have mail capabilities in those days they took advantage of their time by making what became known as Sea Shell Sailors Valentines. These sea fairing men made elaborate designs and flowers made of different sea shells. These valentines took months to design and to create and were very beautiful works of art. They depicted floral scenes, floral designs, graphic designs, and words expressing their love and affection to there loved ones. They would embroider words of endearments and enclose a lock of hair in a heart shaped sea shell. Some of these works of art survive today and are extremely valuable in some cases worth thousands of dollars. The sailors also made floral displays to present to their loved ones. Today this sea shell art is carried on by individuals using the sea shell medium.
Shirley Filardi has studied these techniques and has created some very beautiful floral displays and night lights made from SEA SHELLS, using todays materials and styles. Shirley personally farms most of the SEA SHELLS from the beaches in South Florida and cleans, bleaches, sizes and puts together some remarkably realistic floral displays. She started making a Magnolia display flower from a white clam sea shell. This flower became very popular and she extended her creations to include Night lights, table lights, Candle flowers, stick pins, jewelry, and her latest creation Orchid flowers that are truly beautiful and look like the real thing except they never die and don't need water.
There are also roses, poinsettia, dogwoods, water Lilly and chrysanthemum.
